Summerhill 10th at UCI C1 Granogue

Clif Bar Development CX Team's Danny Summerhill continued his 2007 East Coast swing with an improving 10th place at the UCI C1 Granogue Cyclo-cross in Montchenin, DE. This is a race the team has historically enjoyed coming to, as it's put on by friend-of-the-team Tom McDaniel of the DCCoD.

On a typically hard, technical Mid Atlantic course, Danny stayed in the top 10-15 off the start line, never going over his limit but also riding technically very clean. Eventually Michael Gallegher (US Armed Forces) and Danny dropped the group they were with, Danny taking the sprint for 10th place. Danny was also 2nd U23 behind the in-form Jamey Driscoll (Fiordifrutta), showing his progression over the last few weeks.

This is Danny's top UCI elite result, and with it come valuable points that will get him a better starting position as soon as next week. Tomorrow the team of Danny, team coach John Verheul and ace mechanic Nick Legan travel to the Wissahickon cyclo-cross in PA for round 2 of the Mid Atlantic series, with more UCI points on the line.

Housemate for the weekend Joachim Parbo (CCB Protek), the Danish champion, took out 6th place on the day, ahead of former development team member Troy Wells (Clif Bar).

I saw this sign for a compost bin on my way to class today! Hopefully it is the first of many around campus.

California update

Bjorn Fox, our man in California, checks in again:

"There is a California Cup going on for the first time this year. The series has 5 races. I got second place in the NorCal Cup #2 last weekend in Sacramento in the Junior A group. It was a hard race because I haven't done many 60-minute races. The week before, I got first place in the Bay Area Super Prestige #1 (Junior 15-18). NorCal Cup #1, I placed 2nd in the Juniors."

Keep tearing it up out there Bjorn!!!

Gloucester & Gunnison

The weekend of October 13 & 14 saw Danny Summerhill fly east to represent at the G.P. Gloucester both days. Gloucester, MA is one of the most prestigious 'cross venues in the US, and both days saw hard, fast racing.

Danny picked up 23rd (4th U23) on Saturday, but a series of mechanical problems caused him to simply finish Sunday. The weekend was quite productive though, as team manager Ben Turner and bus driver Josh Liberles flew out to NH early in the week to take delivery of our vegetable oil powered team vehicle. More on that as we're able to get it back to Boulder and refit the thing for cycling team use!

Speaking of Colorado, the rest of the team was ripping it up as usual at the races down in Gunnison. Saturday saw Conor Mullervy win the cat 3 race with his brother Kevin in 2nd, while Sunday they reversed roles and Kevin took the V with Conor finishing in 3rd.

Yannick Eckmann continued his streak of cat 4 wins, winning the race Saturday, while Zack Gould won the junior 10-12 race and took 12th in the cat 4 race later that day. Sunday's race saw Ethan Bell pick up 4th place in the cat 4's as well.

Brady Kappius was fighting off a cold, but still finished 4th in the open men's race Saturday, then moved up to 2nd on Sunday behind The Real Joey Thompson.

This coming weekend will have the Colorado crew racing in Boulder on Saturday, Golden on Sunday, while Danny tackles UCI C1 Granogue (Delaware) and Wissahickon (PA) back in the mid-atlantic. Team coach John Verheul and mechanic Nick Legan (back from track worlds and a move to Boulder) will encompass Danny's entourage.
